President Joe Biden celebrated the passage of the Safer Communities Act with an event on the South Lawn at the White House on Monday. The president was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris, Congress members, and family members of mass shooting victims to commemorate the first major gun safety legislation passed in three decades, where he gave a speech advocating for continued efforts to prevent mass shootings.
In celebrating the first significant gun reform law since the Brady Bill in 1993, President Biden renewed his pledge to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines entirely.
“I’m determined to ban these weapons again and high-capacity magazines that hold 30 rounds and that let mass shooters fire hundreds of bullets in a matter of minutes. I’m not going to stop until we do it,” President Biden said, before going on to call for “safe storage laws, requiring personal liability for not locking up your gun.”
